OSHA Expected To Order New Roof For Town Hall South
A US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) official is urging
that the town promptly repair the leaking roof on Town Hall South in light of
a policeman's OSHA complaint that he slipped on a puddle of water in the
police station there, injuring himself sufficiently to require medical
treatment.
OSHA official Thomas Hozebin has informed the town he will recommend to his
superiors that the town be ordered to repair the leaking roof, which causes
various water-related problems in the building. Town Hall South houses the
police station on its upper level and a former town office building on the
lower level.
Mr Hozebin visited Newtown Tuesday in investigating Detective Sergeant Henry
Stormer's complaint that he slipped and fell on a puddle while leaving Captain
Owen Carney's office June 1.
The sergeant had been on worker's compensation leave as a result of the fall.
In his OSHA complaint, Det Sgt Stormer said the leaking roof poses various
safety problems in the building.
Mr Hozebin is not recommending that the town be fined because it is already in
the process of getting a new roof for the building.
The town has hired Barrett Roofing Company of Danbury to put a new rubber
membrane roof on the building, Mr Rosenthal said. The town chose the firm's
bid of $67,000 for the job.
Roofing company workers were at Town Hall South Wednesday testing the roof in
preparation for roof replacement, First Selectman Herbert Rosenthal said. The
company is expected to start removing the existing roof in a week to 10 days,
after which it will install a new roof, he said.
The OSHA recommendation highlights the need to re-roof the building, Mr
Rosenthal said.
