Sample Camp Highlights The Summer’s Camp Activities

By Kendra Bobowick

Standing near a footbridge spanning a rippling stream at Dickinson Park, resident Billie Cohen and her daughter Usha Honeiy laughed at their beginner juggling attempts. During the first-time sample camp day on June 10, run by the Parks and Recreation Department, they were surrounded by clusters of camp activities, live music, and counselors and site directors waiting to meet the public and explain the coming summer’s camp lineup.

Talking the mother and daughter through the technique was Pam Patterson, who coordinates the Newtown Juggling and Circus Art Club in town. Although juggling is not part of a Parks and Recreation Department camp activity, they participated in the sample camp day that saw roughly 60 guests throughout the afternoon where Director Amy Mangold greeted parents and children. She hoped that the day helped “showcase all the camps we offer.”

During the sample camps both parents and campers had a chance to talk to counselors and meet the people who would be teaching their children this summer.

Sitting under the pavilion, Nicole Christensen reached into a basket of multicolored yarns and continued weaving a pattern, demonstrating the skills she would teach campers this year. At a nearby table with her fabrics folded and sewing machine ready was Mary Villa, who offers a sewing class. She and Ms Christensen said they had met several interested residents that day.

“It’s a great location, great music, and weather today,” Ms Villa added.

Assistant Director of Recreation RoseAnn Reggiano was pleased with the day’s turnout. Considering this was the first sample camp her department had organized, she said, “I think it went really well.” She feels camp activities received “good exposure.” Campers and parents had a chance to meet counselors and talk about “ things they were interested in,” she said. Camping dates start later this month.

On June 25, “Everything begins,” Ms Reggiano said. Camp sessions will continue through August 10. Participants can register up to the day the session begins. New this year at Dickinson are skateboarding lessons. Learn more about the camp schedule at www.newtown-ct.gov.
