Hamfest ‘Calls’ To Radio Enthusiasts

Radio gear, antennas, books, tools, and more filled vendors’ tables during the annual Western Connecticut Hamfest on September 9. Sponsored by the Candlewood Amateur Radio Association (CARA), vendors and enthusiasts gathered at the Edmond Town Hall’s rear parking lots and lower gymnasium for refreshments, food, raffles, door prizes, and a chance to peruse radio equipment for sale from private and commercial sellers and a tailgate party.

Among the many CARA members enjoying the morning was past president Roger Mitchell. Describing the day as similar to an amateur radio flea market, he said vendors will often offer specials, offer brief talks and advice to guests.

In the lower lot, Glenn Cooper of Albany N.Y., with a call sign of W2BK (welcome to Burger King), stood at a table of goods he brought to sell. Laughing at his call sign, he said, “If there is a 2 in it, it often means you’re from New York.”

 Hamfest Chairman Joe de Groot said all money raised helped fund the club’s activities. Roger Strong of Bethel explained that the annual event is one of the club’s main fundraisers.
