REDDING â A frustrating one-point loss at Joel Barlow in Redding Tuesday night dropped the NHS boysâ junior varsity basketball teamâs record to 10-6. The Nighthawks fell, 55-54, after a controversial call at the end of the game.
With 7.9 seconds left to go and down by a point, Newtown got the ball down low to Tommy Ryan for what was supposed to be a last-second shot. But while in the act of shooting he was fouled as the final horn sounded
The officials then waved the game over, but allowed Tommy to go to the line to shoot his foul shots. To the Newtown sideâs dismay, he was only granted a one-and-one opportunity rather than two shots.
Joel Barlow was granted a timeout, as well, which led to an argument about whether or not the game was over and whether or not the Newtown players could line up at the line.
Oddly, Joel Barlow was granted the time out (which is not allowed if the game is over)_and the Newtown players were for some reason not allowed to line up.
Meanwhile, Ryan had to wait around to shoot his shots, and, thanks in part to the refs, missed the one that would have tied the game. It was a minor blemish on what has been a standout year for the entire team.
Against Barlow, Andrew Fiscella led the way with 24 points, Ryan hit for 10, while Ryan Kelly and Casey Kirch chipped in with six and seven points.
Last Friday, Newtown beat Jonathan Law, 62-47, as Kelly scored 22, Ryan had 10 and Ryan Tracy hit for nine.
On February 7, the Night-hawks beat Bethel, 50-47, as Fiscella poured in 20 points and Kelly added 11.
In a 67-48 loss at Bunnell January 30, Fiscella led the locals with 17 points while Kelly added 15, and it was Kelly and Fiscella leading Newtown in scoring again in a 69-45 loss to Immaculate, pumping in 16 and 16 points, respectively.
