Cancer Project Offering ‘Food For Life’ Lessons

BRIDGEPORT — St Vincent’s Medical Center is offering “Food For Life,” a free series of cooking classes for cancer survivors as well as the general public. The classes address the nutritional needs of cancer survivors and also the link between good nutrition and cancer prevention and recurrence.

There will be live cooking demonstrations throughout the program. The series is co-sponsored by St Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound and The Cancer Project.

The nonprofit Cancer Project promotes cancer prevention and survival through a better understanding of cancer causes, particularly the link between nutrition and cancer. Its goal is to save lives through research, education, and advocacy.

The Cancer Project also conducts clinical research studies to investigate dietary issues and publicizes the need for cancer prevention and the value of healthy diet changes. An independent, separately incorporated affiliate of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), The Cancer Project advances cancer prevention and survival through nutrition education and research.

All classes will run from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the Hawley Conference Center on the fourth floor of St Vincent’s new Elizabeth Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care adjacent to the main hospital. The October 25: session is titled “Favoring Fiber” and a November 29 session will focus on “Foods and Breast and Prostate Cancer Survival.”

The Cancer Project’s “Food For Life Nutrition and Cooking Series” was launched in 2001 to help cancer survivors take advantage of the healing power of foods.

The class series covers a variety of cancer-related nutrition topics and demonstrates how to prepare several meals loaded with antioxidants and phytochemicals, high fiber and low fat foods, and healthy dairy alternatives.

The series also provides information on meal planning and how to maintain a healthy weight.

Free parking is available in the new garage located immediately in front of St Vincent’s Medical Center. Registration is required; call the SWIM Support and Resource Line at 203-576-6158 or e-mail tmclaugh@stvincents.org to register.
