ILLINOIS STATE MUSEUM CHICAGO GALLERY EXPLORES âGRAMMAR OF LANDSCAPEâ w/2 cuts
ak/gs set 9/19 #712597
CHICAGO, ILL. â âThe Grammar of Landscape: Eleven Photographic Visions of Illinois,â the Illinois State Museum Chicago Galleryâs new exhibit, will be on view through January 25. A public reception will be held on Friday, September 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
âThe Grammar of Landscapeâ looks at the land around Illinois in terms of building blocks: wetlands, prairies, forest, plains, agriculture, the lake, the city and industry. In a healthy environment these âunitsâ function symbiotically to create a viable ecobiotic system in much the same way that parts of speech combine to create effective language for communication.
Included are photographers Art Sinsabaugh, one of the late masters of photography whose iconic panoramas changed Midwestern photography; mature midcareer artists Barbara Crane, Gary Kolb, Rhondal McKinney and Bob Thall; a newer generation of photographers includes Michelle Keim, Jin Lee, Michael McGuire and Bill Sosin; the late David Avison and influential performance artist Joan Dickinson are included in the show.
âThe Grammar of Landscapeâ maps the terrain of Illinois through the eyes of 11 artists with unique visions. As part of the mapping concept inherent in the exhibit, United States Geological Survey Maps are placed by each artistâs work to show where he or she found inspiration. Wall labels based on the ideas of important environmental philosophers of our day complete the exhibit.
The ISM Chicago Gallery is on the second floor of the James R. Thompson Center at 100 West Randolph Street. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and is free and open to the public. For information, www.museum.state.il.us/ismsites/Chicago or 312-814-5322.
