Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

Programs

*BINGO is Tuesday, June 24, at 1 pm.

*STRAWBERRIES, CHOCOLATE AND WINE on Wednesday, June 25, with lunch at Torches on the Hudson restaurant and then onto Baldwin Vineyards for a gourmet afternoon of desserts and wine tasting. Departs at 10:15 am; $76 per person.

 

Day Trips

*Narrated SIGHTSEEING CRUISE aboard The Southland on Wednesday, July 9; departing at 9:30 am en route to Narragansett, R.I. Enjoy Lunch at the Coast Guard House. Visit Harbor of Refuge, Point Judith Lighthouse and islands and inlets of the great Salt Pond. Cost is $83.

*Back by popular demand is a trip to Hunts Landing on July 16 for a Patriots Salute, with feasting, dancing, singing, and merriment. A great way to celebrate the Independence Day. Depart at 9 am; $88 per person.

*Enjoy ITALIAN FESTIVAL at the Aqua Turf Club on Tuesday, July 29, with delicious food, a live band, interactive entertainment and lots of fun. Depart 10 am; $65.

*See the Mel Brooks musical, The Producers, at WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE on Wednesday, September 3. Depart at 9 am; $76 per person.

 

Recurring Activities

*FREE COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week Of

June 23–27

Monday: Creamy tomato soup, cold cut grinder with ham, turkey, and cheese on a grinder roll with mustard, lettuce and tomato, 3-bean salad, pineapple tidbits.

Tuesday: Swiss steak served over noodles with gravy, diced carrots, wheat bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Wednesday: Fish with Florentine sauce or chicken salad sandwich on rye, brown rice pilaf, Italian blend vegetables, seasonal fresh fruit.

Thursday: Yankee pot roast with gravy, baked potato, peas & pearl onions, dinner roll, birthday cake.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, June 30: BBQ chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, green beans, warm buttermilk biscuit, pistachio pudding with whipped topping.
