Johnson Convery
Beloved Mother Was Role Model For Women In Law
Susannah Convery, 83, died September 22 after a period of failing health. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., August 25, 1926, daughter of Katherine Scott Dow Johnson and Frank Willard Johnson, longtime Sandy Hook summer residents, and later in life, Newtown Main Street residents.Â
Ms Convery spent many summers at her fatherâs family home in Sandy Hook, and remained a frequent visitor to Newtown throughout her life. Soon after graduating from Connecticut College for Women, she married Harold William Walters, a naval pilot, and the father of her three children.
After her divorce, she attended Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco while raising her children. She went on to many accomplishments during her lifetime. She was one of three women in the Hastings Class of 1960, one of the first women to clerk for a California Supreme Court Justice, and one of the first women to work in the Santa Clara District Attorneyâs Office.
She later married John Henry Convery, a CPA and business attorney.
Ms Convery started her own successful practice in Walnut Creek, Calif. In February 2001 she was appointed to the State Barâs Committee on Senior Lawyers of the California State Bar Association. In 2002 she was honored by the Hastings 1066 Foundation in recognition of service as a trustee.
Susannah leaves behind her three children; a brother; and six grandchildren. She will be remembered for her love for her children and grandchildren, her laughter, passion for politics, loyalty to friends, and dedication to her profession. She was an intelligent, strong, determined woman devoted to her passions.
There will be a memorial service held from 11 am to 3 pm, on October 31, at the Claremont Hotel Resort and Spa, 41 Tunnel Road, Berkeley, Calif.
Memorial donations may be made to UC Hastings College of the Law, Alumni Center, 200 McAllister Street, San Francisco CA 94102.  Â
