Oxford Hires John Reed

As Interim Superintendent

By Eliza Hallabeck

Newtown’s former superintendent of schools John Reed, who retired in 2002, was hired recently as the interim superintendent of schools for Oxford.

“I’ve always enjoyed being a person who is a part of a school system, and the opportunity to experience that periodically is a wonderful part of my retirement,” said Mr Reed this week.

Mr Reed served as Newtown’s superintendent of schools for just over 20 years, and currently sits on the Fairfield Hills Authority.

Since his retirement in 2002, Mr Reed said he has worked in different positions in several school districts, including Darien, Middletown, and Weston.

Mr Reed said he was contacted to talk to the Oxford school district for the position, and he will replace another interim superintendent.

Oxford, he said, “sort of reminds me, in some respects, of Newtown in the early 1980s as far as a community’s growth and the kinds of expectations that they have.”

Mr Reed said he is looking forward to starting the position in early January.
