Annual Town Health Fair Set For September 29 At NMS
September 29 is the 19th annual Health and Public Safety Fair, sponsored by the Newtown Prevention Council. Fair organizers Mae Schmidle, Della Schmid, Donna Culbert, and Judy Blanchard are excited about promoting all the free health screenings, free information and advice, and all the giveaways.
Residents are invited to the Newtown Middle School between 9 am and 1 pm.
âThere is no admission cost to attend any or all of the four-hour event,â Ms Culbert said. âResidents can drop by for a quick visit or stay for as long as they like. There are numerous free drawings, including a bicycle from Bike Shop sponsored by the Newtown Prevention Council; gift certificates to many of Newtownâs restaurants and eateries to honor Family Day, and promotions from many of our local businesses.â
Newtownâs first responders will be front and center to meet visitors. All five volunteer fire companies â Botsford, Dodgingtown, Hawleyville, Hook & Ladder, and Sandy Hook â will be represented along with the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Newtown Underwater Search And Rescue.Â
âOut front as well as inside the gym Newtown Police Department members will be demonstrating their canine officerâs skills, inspecting or installing child safety seats, and providing DARE information,â she added.
Free health screenings will include:
*Skin cancer screening by Dr William Notaro
*Hearing screening by audiologist Anne Lynn,
*Posture and scoliosis screening by Dr Della Schmid,
*Cholesterol screening by Impact Health,
*Blood pressure and blood sugar screening by Western Connecticult Home Care (formerly Danbury Visiting Nurse Association),
*Spinal screening and stress screening by Popowich Chiropractic and Accupuncture and
*BMI body mass index by Shaklee.
More local and regional health care and service providers will be on hand to share information and services, including: American Red Cross, Kevinâs Community Center, Masonicare, local dentists Dr Dawn Bogdan, and Drs Dudley, Condon and Golisano, Lutheran Social Services, and the Newtown Visiting Nurse Association
Other organizations caring for Newtownersâ health and sharing their expertise will be Al-anon, Aqua Environmental Lab, Newtown Chamber of Commerce, Childrenâs Adventure Center, CT Tick Control, Juice Plus, Newtown Foot Care Group, Newtown Lyme Disease Task Force, Newtown Prevention Council, Newtown Youth & Family Services, Pediatric Therapy Associates, Porcoâs Karate Academy, TOPS â Take Pounds Off Sensibly, Urgent Care of Connecticut, Voice for Joanie, and the Womenâs Center
Bethel VNA will be offering flu shots, and New York Life will be providing child IDs as well as information about life insurance and long-term care insurance.
Newtown Social Services will be collecting much-needed food and items for its food pantry. Newtown Emergency Communications will be providing information about emergency communications, CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and Emergency Management.
Newtown Health District will have public health information about tick bite prevention at its BLAST table, and Newtown Public Works staff will have important recycling information.
Castle Hill Farm will be visiting on the front lawn with one of its cows, and complimentary Marcus Dairy milk will be available.
In addition to hosting the table to assist Dr Notaro for skin cancer screening, the Newtown VNA will have info to sign-up for St Vincentâs mobile mammography van that will be coming to Newtown Municipal Center at Fairfield Hills on October 27.
Women who are interested in having this life-saving service must sign up for their mammography screening in advance of the October 27 screening date, and may do so at the Health Fair.
