Council To Meet On Tax Relief Plan

By Steve Bigham

The Legislative Council will hold a special meeting May 24 to discuss and possibly vote on a proposed tax relief plan for the elderly. There will also be a public hearing to allow residents to speak on the issue.

Town officials have been eager to pass a program that would help defray the tax burden on Newtown’s elderly residents living on fixed incomes. Tax Collector Carol Mahoney believes it is imperative that the plan be put in place for this year. Taxes are simply too high for people on fixed incomes, she said. A program would need to be finalized before tax bills go out in July.

The council’s ordinance committee has discussed the issue and is leaning toward the plan first proposed by Mrs Mahoney and Selectman Joe Bojnowski. Their plan would provide tax relief to senior citizens (65 and over) who meet certain income criteria. Such a program would require a means test. In addition, the ordinance committee plans to recommend a tax relief cap of $330,000 as a total lost revenue cost, according to committee chairman Will Rodgers.

Last month, the Legislative Council held a lengthy discussion on the merits of a tax relief program for the elderly. While many support the idea, others wonder if the town could afford to implement such a program this year.
