Next time your pet fixes those beseeching brown eyes on you and begs for a treat, donât think heâs being greedy â he just wants to help less fortunate dogs!
Canine Advocates of Newtown, Inc. has become a participant in the Heinz Homeless Pets Program, a plan endorsed by the American Humane Association, which helps organizations raise essential funds for the care and feeding of homeless animals by exchanging cash for product redemption symbols.
The program is simple. Heinz pet foods such as Cycle, Ken-L Ration, Gravy Train and Gainesburgers feature the âHomeless Homerâ dog symbol on the packets. Treats such as Meaty Bones, Recipe and Grill Bits feature either the Homeless Homer symbol or a UPC code. Dog lovers are invited to collect these symbols and UPC codes and forward them to Canine Advocates for redemption.
Luise Lenk, a member of the Board of Canine Advocates, said: âThe wonderful thing about this program is that dog lovers can help us to raise funds at no additional cost to them. All they do is feed their dogs their usual food and treats and send the symbols to us.â
Canine Advocates of Newtown was founded to be a voice for the dogs of Newtown and to further the quality of life, safety, and health of the dogs at the Newtown Dog Pound. Volunteers assist in the adoption process through advertising, screening, and education, while providing walks, socialization and human interaction for the dogs.
Symbols from the pet foods may be sent to Canine Advocates of Newtown at P. O. Box 236, Newtown, CT 06470. For further information about the Homeless Pets Program please write to the above address, email ljc@snet.net, or call 426-5327, providing your name and address, for a full list of the foods and treats featuring the symbols.
