Itâs time for pitchers and catchers to report to spring training in Florida and itâs time for baseball (that is, Base Ball) players in Newtown to report to the kickoff meeting of the Newtown Vintage Base Ball team.
The meeting will be held Friday, February 25, from 6 to 7:30 pm in the Edmond Town Hall gymnasium.
The purpose of the meeting is to talk about the proposed 2005 season, the Newtown Tercentennial celebration (and exhibition game with the Hartford Senators), to drum up support for more players and supporters, and to âthrow the ball around.â
The main goal is to be ready for the August 6 exhibition game (which the Senators have confirmed they would play â be it by 1886 or 1880 rules), but if enough interest and enough players are available then an entire summer season could be put together.
Some of the support the team would need includes people who can sew canvas and leather and other items; weld a catcherâs mask; turn baseball bats; trainers; bat boys or girls; and people who are interested in the game and can help reach out to potential sponsors.
âOur goal in this early Spring meeting is to give everyone an opportunity to gain a better understanding of vintage base ball and how it differs from contemporary baseball, play a little catch and get a general feel for the game,â said organizer Ray Shaw. âEveryone from high school age and above is welcome.â
