George Washington Figure Leads
William Smithâs Backofen Auction
EAST PLAINFIELD, N.H. â George Washington, the 65-inch-tall folk art figure who was the star lot at the Backofen auction on Friday, June 29, brought $200,000, plus the ten percent buyerâs premium. The figure sold to retired auctioneer Jim Norman of Alabama who commented after the sale, âI thought it would be more expensive.â
The Washington carving was in the original buff and blue paint with red gaiters and waistcoat, and 1776 carved into his tricorn hat. The sale was conducted on site, under tents, by William A. Smith, Inc, Auctioneers and Appraisers. Following the 320-lot cataloged sale, with additions from several of the Backofen out buildings, Bill Smith said he was âdelightedâ with the results of the sale.
