NHS Thanks

Honored Guests

To the Editor:

On behalf of the entire administrative team at Newtown High School, I would like to thank all the local veterans who attended the annual lunch and assembly held on November 8. We are humbled to have been in the presence of such brave and honorable citizens. I would also like to thank The Bee for covering this special event.

Some of the organizations that made the day possible include Newtown Culinary, Newtown Greenery, the Guidance Honors Association, FBLA, the Concert Band and NHS senior Ryan Silveira, whose rendition of the National Anthem was outstanding. A special thank you also goes to the NHS custodial staff for their support. This annual event would not have been successful without the support of these groups of students, their teachers, and advisers.

I would especially like to thank our guest speak, Captain Jeff Ritter from the CTARNG 1/102d Infantry. Captain Ritter’s remarks and the images he showed to the students were heartfelt, sincere, and above all an accurate portrayal of the sacrifices our volunteer force endure everyday for the betterment of city, state and nation. The images of military personnel serving in far distant places away from the comforts of home surely speaks volumes to Captain Ritter’s overall message that “freedom is never free.”

Furthermore, the behavior of the students at the assembly was impeccable. During the assembly a color guard from the CTARNG 1/102 Infantry posted the Colors and demonstrated the proper way to fold an America flag. I am wholeheartedly proud of the students for displaying behavior that was beyond reproach. The actions of our students demonstrated to our honored guests that the future of the nation is in deed, in good hands.

Finally, Newtown High School will continue to do this event because it is important for students to know why Veterans’ Day is so important to a free and open society. We look forward to seeing all of the veterans next year.

Respectfully,

Scott Clayton

Assistant Principal
