2008 Battle Of The Books

Will Be At The Library

Signups are open at C.H. Booth Library until March 10 for the Fourth Annual Battle of the Books trivia contest. The contest will be held Saturday, March 29, at 1 pm, with a snow date of Sunday, March 30.

Students in grades five to eight who either live in or attend school in Newtown or are home schooled here may form teams of three to five participants and test their knowledge of four books,  The 7 Professors of the Far North by John Fardell, Escaping the Giant Wave by Peg Kehret, The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling.

The first place team members will each win a $20 gift certificate and second place team members a $10 gift certificate to an area bookstore. The winning team members’ names will also be inscribed on a plaque in the Young Adult Department, and each member may select a book that the library will purchase and dedicate in his or her name.

Responding to several suggestions at last year’s tournament, the format has been changed for this year. The procedure will be similar to the final round on the television show Jeopardy. All of the teams will hear the same question together, write their answer, and then display the answers at the same time. Each team will receive credit for a correct answer.

To enter the Battle of the Books, form a team; sign up the team by March 10 at C.H. Booth Library, and pick up the complete information packet; read the four books, copies of which are available in the young adult section of the library; submit trivia questions on the four books by March 10; and attend the March 26 practice round (optional). The new Jeopardy style format with written answers will be explained there.

Details are in the young adult section of the library, online at the biblio.org/yawebspot, or call young adult librarian Margaret Brown at 426-4533.

The 2007 winning team and the members were The Bookworms: Nick Burns (captain), Austin Bodetti, Garrison Buzzanca, Richard Huffman, and Patrick Rowley.
