Zeifman

US Judiciary Committee General Counsel During Tumultuous Times

Jerome M. Zeifman, 84, of Newtown, died July 22, at Danbury Health Care, Danbury. He is survived by his wife, Marianne Zeifman. He was born August 13, 1925, in Mineola, N.Y.

He served as a naval communications officer during World War II.

He attended Harvard University, and received a law degree from New York University. Mr Zeifman opened a private law practice in Nyack, N.Y., prior to working for the Committee on the Judiciary of the United States House of Representatives. He served as counsel (1961–73) and general counsel (1973–74) to the Judiciary Committee. He was general counsel during the Watergate Scandal, the threatened impeachment of Richard Nixon, and the confirmations of Gerald Ford and Nelson Rockefeller. He retired from the committee staff in 1974 to teach law at the University of Santa Clara.

Calling hours were scheduled at the Hull Funeral Home, 60 Division Street, Danbury, Thursday, August 19, from 6 to 8 pm. Cremation was private.
