Garden Club Preparing For Annual Greens Sale

The Garden Club of Newtown will hold its annual Greens Sale on Saturday, December 4, from 9 am to 1 pm, at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole).

Members of the club plan all year for this special fundraiser by drying plants from their gardens and collecting pinecones and other items to use in decorating wreaths, swags, and table arrangements for the holiday season. Holly, winterberry, rose hips, boxwood and a wide assortment of evergreens will be incorporated into the designs.

Tabletop boxwood trees, kissing balls, roping and bunches of loose greens will be available and Christmas treats for the birds, a very popular item from last year, will be returning. The main focus of the club members is to provide a variety of unusual holiday decorations made from fresh and natural materials at great prices.

Noted Newtown author and gardener Sydney Eddison will be present from 9 to 11 am to sign her latest book Gardening for a Lifetime: How To Garden Wiser as You Grow Older (hardcover, $19.95), a touching memoir that shares insights and wisdom gained from a lifetime of gardening. Mrs Eddison was recently featured on The Martha Stewart Show, discussing her informative and entertaining book, which will be available for purchase at the Greens Sale and makes a great Christmas gift for any gardener.

The Garden Club of Newtown uses profits from this fundraiser to contribute to the community in many ways, including scholarships for graduates through Newtown Scholarship Association. The club also maintains the gardens at the Matthew Curtiss House and the Blue Star Highway Memorial Marker near the VFW Post.
