And Off The Court

Thursday night last week my wife and I witnessed what it’s really like for our daughter to be a teammate on the Newtown High School girls basketball team. In an ultimate demonstration of compassion and humility, the whole team presented themselves to lift the spirits of Bridget at the wake of her grandmother, Catherine Goette Ochs, who passed away on February 4.

The parents and coaches of these young ladies should be very proud of the camaraderie that they demonstrate to each other, both on and off the court. They showed up after what was reported to be a grueling practice and spent a few quiet moments with Bridget before expressing their condolences to Bridget’s mom and me. We can truly say that your hugs and greetings were very warmly appreciated.

Bridget’s grandmother Catherine spent the last 15 years watching many of these young women grow into the fine examples that they are in representing Newtown High. May her spirit for life and sports inspire all of you to continue to be the best as you will be fondly treasured in our hearts, long after the last games are played. Thank you for being true friends: Carley, Kristie, Mary Jo, Maddy, Kristiana, Sam, Tressa, Cassie, Erin, Carly, Jess and Riley. Go Nighthawks!
