David R. W. Raynolds
David R. W. Raynolds, 87, of Lander, Wyo., died June 19 of heart failure. Born in New York City, February 15, 1928, he was the son of the late author Robert F. Raynolds and Marguerite Gerdau Raynolds. He grew up with his two sisters in Newtown.
He married Mary “May” Alice Kean in 1951, and enjoyed 64 years of shared adventure. After Army service in Occupied Japan, Mr Raynolds did graduate work in economics. He joined the Foreign Service in 1956, and the family was stationed in El Salvador, France, Haiti, Pakistan, and Washington, DC.
The Raynolds settled at Table Mountain Ranch in Wyoming in 1975.
Mr Raynolds had a wonderful ability to soak up knowledge, and a generous and gregarious nature. He loved the printed word, and had an astounding memory and ability to comprehend and communicate the larger contexts of history, society, and economics. His last international adventure, earlier this June, was to the walled city of Carcassonne in Southern France, where he and his wife introduced their granddaughters to the subtleties of croissants and siege strategies of European armies.
His wife; children and spouses Bob and Mary, Linda and Elijah Cobb, Martha and Sam Dashevsky, Laura and Alex Blackmer, and David and Sharon Bolles; eight grandchildren; and sister Ann Listokin and her husband Bob survive Mr Raynolds. His parents and sister Barbara predeceased him.
A celebration of life will take place from 5 to 9 pm, Tuesday, July 14, at the Lander (Wyo.) Community Center.
