Water Tank Tampering Reported
Water Tank Tampering Reported
Nunnawauk Meadows residents were told to refrain from drinking their tap water Sunday after it was discovered that someone had tampered with a screen around a public water supply tank at Fairfield Hills.
State Police are investigating the incident, which occurred late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. The water supply serves 1,000 people.
According to Health District Director Mark Cooper, workers isolated the tank and temporarily hooked users up to United Water supplies. However, there were no signs of any contamination to the water.
This was the second incident at the Fairfield Hills water tank in less than a year. Nine months ago, there was an intentional breach of the tank, which resulted in precautionary steps being taken in the event the water supply was intentionally contaminated by vandals. Testing showed there was no contamination, however.
Two large water storage tanks sit atop a hill overlooking Fairfield Hills, Garner Correctional Institution, and Nunnawauk Meadows. The two 500,000-gallon tanks hold drinking water for those facilities.
