Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

Holiday Events

*Annual COOKIE SWAP on December 19 at 1 pm. Bring two dozen homemade, not store bought, and recipes for exchange. Call to sign up; you must contribute to swap.

*Christmas Bingo Party with Santa & Mrs Claus on December 20 at 1 pm. Sing-along; RSVP to contribute hors d’oeuvres.

*The Senior Center will be closed Monday, January 1, New Year’s Day.

*See CLARENCE DARROW, A ONE-MAN SHOW performed by Richard Clark on Tuesday, January 16, at 1 pm, at the Senior Center, with a snow date Monday, January 22, at 1 pm. Call for reservations.

*AARP INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE available on Mondays only from February 5 through April 9, 9 am to noon by appointment only. Bring last year’s tax return and any other pertinent information. Call 270-4310 to set up an appointment.

*Newtown Social Services will be taking heating applications for deliverable fuels for oil, propane, and kerosene. Assistance is for delivery until March. Applications for Yankee Gas and CL&P will be taken starting January 2. Call Ann Piccini at 270-4330 for more information.

*SOCIAL GATHERING on the first Tuesday of every month from 4 to 6 pm. Join in on a friendly game of cards or just socialize. Bring your sandwich or order out/in. The center supplies coffee, tea, and plates.

*REMINDERS: *BLOOD PRESSURE checks on second Thursday of each month or the last Wednesday of the month.

*TAI CHI & CHI KUNG is offered on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. Steve Kurimai instructs the gentle arts of movement that promote mind-body connection, and improve balance, coordination and relaxation.

*WALKING FOR FITNESS every Tuesday and Thursday at 2 pm for 30 minutes.

*Let’s get together for the BREAKFAST CLUB every Thursday. Meet at center and take the van to the Blue Colony Diner. Limited to 12 persons at a time. Call to reserve a spot.

*Sign up for COMPUTER CLASSES on Monday and Tuesday, from 3 to 4:30 pm.

December 18–22

Reservations must be made 3 days in advance.

Monday: December 18: Tomato Florentine soup, unsalted crackers, grilled cheese sandwich, tossed salad/with cucumber and ranch dressing, fruit cocktail.

Tuesday: December 19: Cajun pork, Louisiana rice, chopped spinach, whole wheat bread, dice fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Wednesday: Chili dogs, hot dog rolls, hot baked fries, mustard/ketchup, chilled coleslaw, white as snow cake.

Thursday: BBQ chicken quarter, macaroni & cheese, mixed vegetables, seedless rye bread, birthday cake.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: December 25: Closed Christmas.

Tuesday: December 26: Portuguese grilled chicken with onion & tomato, rice & beans, broccoli florets, whole wheat bread, cling peaches.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts;

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM walking for fitness.
