Continuing Education Classes Available

Newtown Continuing Education has limited openings available in the following classes and activities in its summer program for students currently in kindergarten to eighth grade. The Young Engineers Workshop — For students exiting fourth to seventh grade in two sessions at Reed Intermediate School, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, $325 per session. The first session runs from July 8 to July 19. The second session runs from July 22 to August 2. It is an engineering concepts course for students who enjoy science and are curious about how things work. Explore machines like catapults and trebuchets, building and testing them, and then fast forward to more modern inventions such as rockets and hydraulic machines. Limited to 12 students.

SMART Camp (Summer Music and Arts) — For students exiting kindergarten to sixth grade, at Head O’ Meadow Elementary School, 8:30 am to 1 pm, $349 per session. The first session runs from July 8 to July 19. The second session runs from July 22 to August 2. Offering creative arts, theater, science, and more with a staff of professional artists and teachers.

Lights, Camera, Action! Video Production for Kids, Part 1 — For students exiting second grade and up, at Reed Intermediate School, 9 am to noon, $139, July 8 to 12. Basic video skills are taught in this session. Using live and stationary props, students will learn how to get the best shot to capture the magic on video. Editing video and adding audio to video will be taught so that students will have an array of finished videos for the week. Limited to 15 students.

Lights, Camera, Action! Video production for Kids, Part 2 — For students exiting second grade and up, at Reed Intermediate School, 9 am to noon, $139, July 15 to 19. Students will refine their video-making skills by adding scripts and props to turn their video into a short movie. Different filming techniques such as stop-motion and using a green screen will be incorporated. By the end of the week, students will have learned how to write, film, and edit a video that could be published on YouTube. Lights, Camera, Action! Part I is not a requirement. Limited to 15 students.

Coding For Fun — For students exiting kindergarten to third grade, at Reed Intermediate School, 9 am to noon, July 22 to 26, $139. Students won’t believe that they are learning to code using these interactive games. Learning to code is learning the language of computers through games. Students will experiment with a variety of interactive programs throughout the week, learning through trial and error. Minimal reading is necessary to be successful. Limited to 15 students.
