Unbeaten Volleyball Team Goes For Another Conference Championship
Newtown High School's boys' volleyball team finished the regular season a perfect 19-0, making it two consecutive unbeaten regular slates, and now will go for its second straight South-West Conference championship.
The Nighthawks, 8-0 in SWC play, will host the title game on Friday, May 24, beginning at 6 pm. Newtown will take on either Joel Barlow of Redding or Oxford — both of which went 5-3 and were to play a tiebreaker match on Wednesday night.
Newtown defeated visiting Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-13) on May 17. Ardi Kodzodziku had ten digs and 18 kills; Eric Moore had four digs, three aces, four kills, two blocks, and 22 assists; Danny Schreiber logged three digs, four kills, and two blocks; and Max Wrage tallied five digs, five aces, one kill, and 15 assists.
On May 21, Newtown beat visiting Lewis Mills of Burlington 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-11). Robbie Morrill had four digs, five aces, and ten kills; Robert DiSibio had nine kills, and a pair of blocks; and Wrage had three digs, five aces, two kills, and 17 assists.
The Nighthawks defeated Barlow and Oxford twice each in three sets. Newtown won 15 matches by 3-0 scores during this dominant spring.
