Annual Battle Of The

Books Event Scheduled

Signups are open until March 9 for the fifth annual Battle of the Books trivia contest to be held Saturday afternoon, March 28, at 1, in the C.H. Booth Library. A snow date of Sunday, March 29, is scheduled.

Battle of the Books is a team competition is which students in grades 5 through 8, who either live in or attend school in Newtown, form teams of three to five members to test their knowledge of four books, through questions devised by each team about selected books. This year’s books are Shakespeare’s Secret by Elise Broach, MVP:Magellan Voyage Project by Douglas Evans, Case Of The Missing Marquess by Nancy Springer, and Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.

To enter, form a team and sign up by March 9 at the library. A complete information packet will be provided to be shared by all team members.

Read all four books, copies of which are available in the Young Adult department of the library on the main floor.

Submit your team’s trivia questions on the four books by March 9 at 5 pm.

A practice round that must be attended by one or more members of each team will be held March 25. There is a limit of 16 teams, so early sign up is encouraged.

A Jeopardy-style format, similar to that of the television show, will be used. All of the teams hear the same question together, write their answer, and then display the answers at the same time.  Each team is credited for a correct answer.

Prizes include a $20 gift certificate to an area bookstore for each member of the first place team. The second place team members each win a $10 gift certificate to an area bookstore. The winning team members’ names are also be inscribed on a plaque in the Young Adult department, and each member may select a book that the library will purchase and dedicate in their name.

Full details about the event are in the Young Adult area of the library, or online at biblio.org/yawebspot; or call young adult librarian Margaret Brown at 426-4533 or children’s librarian Alana Bennison at 426-3851.
