Police Explain Wintertime Snow/Ice Rules For Travel Safety
The police departmentâs traffic enforcement unit is reminding local motorists and private snow removal workers of the rules that apply during the wintertime concerning snow removal.
In order to allow the town road department workers to clear local roads of snow and ice, vehicular parking on town roads between sunset and sunrise will be prohibited through March 15, under the provisions of town law.
Also, residents are responsible for the removal of any snow, ice, sleet, or debris on any sidewalk adjacent to their residence, under the provisions of a town ordinance.
Police also remind residents and private snow removal workers that state law prohibits them from depositing snow or ice on any road, or within 12 feet of a road.
Also, police remind drivers that it is illegal to drive vehicles that have snow accumulations on the top, back, or sides of vehicles. Such deposits of snow and ice may break loose and fall from vehicles, creating a hazard or nuisance for other drivers, according to police.
Police also want drivers to clear all the windows of vehicles of snow and ice, so that their view of the road is unobstructed when driving.      Â
