Senior Gold Lacrosse Team Wins Tourney

The Newtown Senior Gold U15 boys’ lacrosse team won the CONNY Tournament this past week. Game results are as follows:

Senior Gold 14, Wakeman Senior Team Eight 5: The Senior Gold team, seeded first in the tourney, prevailed over the No. 4 Wakeman squad in the tourney semifinals at Yale University. After a few weeks off, Newtown came out ready to play and scored four goals in the first quarter, while Wakeman got only one into the net. Another two goals were added by Newtown during the second quarter, but Wakeman was able to pull to within 6-4 at the half. However, the strong skills of goaltender Owen Gray supported by the tough defensive play of Charlie Fletcher, Gordan Walsh, Andrew Svanda, and Christian Morlock, allowed Wakeman to score only one more time the rest of the way. Newtown pulled away behind goals by Jared Pearson (4), Matt Meyers (3), and Nick Genovese (3). Colin Smalkais added two goals to the total and Payton Manning and James Carney each contributed one goal apiece. The aggressive offensive play of Kris Whelan and David Anderson, each with one assist, and midfielder Steven Faxlanger helped the team secure the victory and earn a spot in the final game.

Newtown Senior Gold 9, Docs NYC Eight Blue 8: The Senior Gold defeated the second-seeded Docs in the title game. Jared Pearson caught the Docs goalie off guard just seconds into the game and scored the first goal for Newtown. However, that was not enough to keep the lead and by the end of the first quarter Senior Gold was down by one, 3-2. Newtown found the net two more times during the second quarter while keeping their opposition scoreless and ended the half ahead by one. The rest of the game continued to be a nail-biter with the teams going back and forth, leading to a 6-6 tie heading into the fourth quarter. The Senior Gold boys came together as a team with every player giving it their all to protect a one-goal lead with two men down and just seconds left to the game. By the end of the game, the assists of Kris Whelan and Colin Smalkais helped Josh Headen, Matt Meyers (also two assists), and James Carney each score a goal and add five more goals to Pearson’s game total. Pearson also had two assists.
