Jewelry Artist Will Be In Sandy Hook For One Day Only

Greenwich Village-based jewelry artist Laura Lobdell will be at the little green barn gallery this weekend, showing some of her new jewelry creations and talking with visitors about her work while Sandy Hook Center gets ready for its annual tree lighting.

Ms Lobdell will be at the temporary gallery space at 111 Church Hill Road Saturday, December 1, from 3 to 6 pm, when the recently opened boutique will also be hosting a reception.

Ms Lobdell most recently has been creating Armicitia, delicate amulets fashioned after the jewelry of the same name created by women in Nepal. The bracelets are worn wrapped around the wrist or hung casually around the neck as tokens of friendship and peace. Ms Lobdell’s Armicitia, whose name is derived from the Latin for “to bind by friendship,” have been designed to help support indigenous women and to promote peace.

They are crafted entirely from natural and recycled materials, including sacred sage from Arizona, linen, and vintage denim. Packaging for each is made from artisanal paper derived from Lokta, a sustainably grown shrub found in the Himalayan foothills.

Ms Lobdell also makes paintings, drawings, and designs jewelry in sterling silver and 22 karat gold for men and women. Found objects are an important part of her design process, and she uses everything from guitar picks and skeleton keys to candy and even cigarette butts.

The little green barn gallery is offering a unique collection of art, jewelry, pottery, woven, and wood items, “Gifts from around the corner and around the world,” says gallery owner Mary Fellows. The boutique is open until January 5, and features the same high quality items that Ms Fellows has been bringing to the Sandy Hook Organic Farmers’ Market for six years as well as the type of items she carried in her former store the little green barn.

The store is open Monday through Wednesday from 10 am to 4 pm, Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 10 am until 6 pm. Entry is through the door for Newtown Computer Services.
