Newtown High Swims Past Barlow-Immaculate 104-82 To Improve To 6-2
Leading by only 10 points through half of the meet, the Newtown High School boysâ swimming and diving team pulled away in a 104-82 win over the visiting Joel Barlow-Immaculate co-op on Tuesday night.
In the back half of the meet, Newtown took second through fourth in each the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke to put some needed points on the board.
Six points are given to the winner in an individual event, four for second, a trio of points for third, two for those ending the race in fourth and one point for fifth. In a relay, the quad coming in first gets eight points, with four for second and two points for third.
Luke Fiore was Newtownâs only first-place finisher but the home teamâs depth helped compile points throughout the meet. The 100-yard freestyle event was a highlight for the blue and gold, with Alex Kron quickly behind Fiore to snag second place.
Newtown improved to 6-2 with losses only to powerhouse Pomperaug and rival Brookfield.
The last home meet is Friday against Bethel but Tuesdayâs clash was Senior Night. Prior to the meet, Newtown honored seniors Evan Batzer, Tony Fragoso, Chris Parker and Patrick Stein.
