MORGAN LEHMAN GALLERY NEW PAINTINGS 3 ARTISTS w/1 cut

ak/gs set 8/14 #709153

LAKEVILLE, CONN. — Morgan Lehman Gallery presents an exhibition of new paintings by three artists: Judith Belzer, Joe Goodwin and Kit White, opening with a reception on August 25, from 5 to 7 pm.

Judith Belzer’s work reinvents landscape techniques, by removing the traditional ground plane and horizontal line. While living in Northwestern Connecticut, her work was inspired by the palette and foliage of the intimate New England landscape she saw around her. Now residing on the West Coast, her work is focused on the massive trees of Northern California. She challenges space and order by presenting the natural world at angles rarely seen or imagined.

Joe Goodwin’s paintings also stray from familiar forms, taking inspiration from famed psychologist C.G. Jung’s work on dreams and the collective unconscious. Goodwin’s paintings may be understood as whimsical clouds with more solid landforms emerging from underneath. His painting process of repeated application and reduction results in images of dream-like quality.

Kit White’s work creates a discourse between two different forms of romantic expression: brushed landscapes and linear wanderings. The landscapes remain abstract, referencing the perceived world, but linear shapes interact with the landscape again creating a pathway that leads one out towards the known world, but then circles back into the abstract. The two expressions blend together through color and composition, encouraging the viewer to enter the painting and leave the physical self behind.

The exhibition will be on view through October 7. The gallery is at 24 Sharon Road, Route 41. For information, www.morganlehmangallery.com/ct or 860-435-0898.
