Doughnut Run Will Benefit NYFS

A neat baker’s dozen doughnuts from Andrea’s Bakery could, in a sense, tip the scales.

In their effort to reach Silver Sponsor status for this year’s Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS) 5k race to benefit the group that serves Newtown, Porco’s Karate School members proposed a dare to the school’s owner: on March 30 at 9 am, Michael Porco will run from 113 Church Hill Road, up the hill to Andrea’s Bakery — about two miles — help himself to a baker’s dozen, then run down the hill again on the first-of-its-kind Great Donut Dash. Any funds he raises will feed into his school’s 5k sponsorship funds for NYFS.

“He always said he could eat a dozen doughnuts,” said Nancy Gilbert, an instructor at his school. “We thought this would be fun.” With Ms Gilbert this week at Andrea’s Bakery was shop owner Tony Posca, employee Rob “Coach” Frangione, and Porco’s students Lauren D’Amico, Eric Ralston, and Crystal Knapp.

Karate School students and instructors, plus those gathered at Andrea’s this week, will be out to see Mr Porco run. He seeks direct pledges — buy a square on a board and try to guess his arrival times at different spots along the route. Sponsors can also drop off contributions at the karate school or the bakers. According to Mr Frangione and Mr Posca, spectators who show up at the bakery to see Mr Porco snack on doughnuts can get something sweet, cream-filled, or sugar-coated of their own.

Five push-ups earns you a doughnut, they said.
