Lagana Resigns From The Board Of Education

By Eliza Hallabeck

In an e-mail to Republican Town Committee members, Board of Education Republican member Christopher Lagana announced his resignation from the school board on Sunday, October 17.

“Thank you for the privilege of letting me serve, as one of your representatives on the Newtown Board of Education,” Mr Lagana’s resignation e-mail read. “Circumstances have lead me to a decision, that I will resign from the Newtown Board of Education tomorrow: October 18.”

Mr Lagana said he also sent an e-mail to the Board of Education and to the district on Monday to announce his decision.

“Things have changed for me,” said Mr Lagana Monday morning, “and I have to do what I have to do.”

Mr Lagana said the decision was completely personal, and had nothing to do with party politics or conflicts.

Earlier in the morning, Mr Lagana called Board of Education Chair William Hart to notify him of the resignation.

“I’m very sad to see him leave,” said Mr Hart, minutes after speaking to Mr Lagana.

While serving on the school board, Mr Lagana was a strong contributor and thoughtful member, Mr Hart said.

Mr Lagana earned his seat on the school board in the November 2009 election.

“I think he cared about doing a good job in government,” said Mr Hart, “and he will be missed.”

Since Mr Lagana is also a Republican, his open seat will also need to be filled by a Republican. Mr Hart said he will be contacting the Republican Town Committee for a list of suggested candidates, and, as announced by the school district, interested individuals can send materials to the Newtown Board of Education, 3 Primrose Street, Newtown, CT 06470.
