Grant Will Cover Repairs At Nunnawauk Meadows
Newtown has received a $48,500 grant from the state to do repair work to 56
units at Nunnawauk Meadows, the town's elderly housing complex.
The state provides Small Cities Community Development Block Grants each year
to towns seeking funds for housing, community facilities and public service
activities.
Newtown also applied for a $230,000 grant to improve Edmond Town Hall's
overall handicapped accessibility. This is the second year that the town hall
request was turned down.
"It's hard to know why they chose one over the other," noted Elizabeth
Stocker, the town's community development director. "It's a highly competitive
program. You've just got to keep trying until you get it."
Total grants awarded this year totalled more than $6.7 million.
To date, Newtown has received three Small Cities Community Development Block
Grants in 1985, 1993 and 1996.
In 1985, Newtown received $106,000 to update the Newtown Community Development
Action Plan and to fund site work for the eventual construction of 16
additional units of low-income elderly rental housing at Nunnawauk Meadows.
In 1993 and 1996, Newtown received $400,000 and $300,000, respectively, for
housing rehabilitation activities at Nunnawauk Meadows and privately owned
homes for low-income residents.
