Round Up At Fairfield Hills

State and local police responded to the Second Governor’s Horse Guard last Friday afternoon after about eight horses broke lose from a fenced-in area along Wasserman Way near Fairfield Hills.

After a 45-minute chase, however, the well-trained horses were herded back into their corral without injury. Horse Guard officials arrived soon after and commended the police and Fairfield Hills security for taking swift action. Animal Control Officer George Mattegat also responded to the scene, as did his assistant, Pat Anzellotti.

“We had a couple of state and town police officers there. They were good cowboys,” Mr Mattegat said.

The horses remained in the area throughout the incident, galloping around the Horse Guard’s facility, but never straying far from the area. Police were concerned that the horses might head for major highways, such as Route 25, Route 34 or Interstate 84.

According to Gordon McNeil, the Horse Guard’s captain and executive horse officer, the horses all follow one leader, who is entrusted to guide the other horses in the right direction.
