Memorial For Randy Mas
MONROE â The green adjacent to Stevenson Post Office will be the site of a memorial dedication ceremony in memory of Randy Mas on Saturday, July 29, at 10 am. The youth, who died in an accident on March 13, grew up in the house directly opposite the green where his family still lives.
Stevenson Postmaster Jody Raymond will provide a pictorial cancellation to commemorate the day.
Customers who wish to obtain the cancellation on July 29 should affix a First Class uncancelled stamp to an envelope or postcard. Hand-back service will be provided on July 29 only.
For those who cannot be present on the day of the dedication, requests for the pictorial cancellation must be postmarked no later than 30 days following the requested cancellation date. All requests must include a stamped envelope or postcard bearing at least the minimum first class mail postage (33 cents for an envelope, 20 cents for a postcard).
Requests for cancellations should be addressed to Pictorial Cancellations, Randyâs Tree of Memories Station, 281 Cottage Street, Stevenson, CT 06491-9998. After applying the pictorial cancellation, the postmaster will return the envelope or postcard by First Class mail in the self-addressed envelope provided by the sender.
Last month the green and adjacent traffic circle had a major facelift with the cooperation of the town of Monroe, residents of the community, family and friends. Garth Welch, a landscape horticulturist from Oxford, donated a Yoshino cherry tree, shrubs, plants, and his expertise. Stevenson Lumber Company donated an engraved bronze plaque in memory of Randy Mas. The youth was crushed to death after he crawled under a tractor-trailer to tighten a bolt at Davis Tree & Logging in Bethel. The driver of the vehicle pulled forward, unaware that the teenager was beneath it.
Immediately following the dedication there will be a light brunch for family and friends at Stevenson Firehouse. Those interested in contributing to the Randy Karl Mas Scholarship Fund at Masuk High School should send donations to the fund care of Karla Welch, PO Box 108, Stevenson, CT 06491.
Stevenson Post Office is on Cottage Street, off Route 111, one-quarter of a mile from its junction with Route 34.
