Newtown High School Scholarships Available In The Career Center

The following scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Applications and/or information for these scholarships, as well as ones previously listed in The Newtown Bee, are available there. Call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 if you have any questions.

Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarships 2001 — This scholarship is for high school juniors with a minimum GPA of 2.75 who excel in three out of four areas: special talents, leadership, obstacles overcome, and community service. Applications are available in the Career Center or can be downloaded from www.aasa.org/discover.htm. Application must be received at AASA’s office no later than January 12, 2001.

Washington Workshops 2001 — National Student Leadership Seminars in Washington, DC, for high school students. Seminar types and dates as follows:

The Congressional Seminar – April 21-27 and June 23-29, 2001

The Presidential Inaugural Seminar – January 16-21, 2001

The Diplomacy Seminar – June 30-July 6 and July 28-Aug 3, 2001

Interested students should possess credible academic standing, an interest in the seminar issues, and high standards of personal character and integrity. Applications can be found in the Career Center or visit the Web at www.workshops.org.

University of Connecticut Nutmeg Scholarship — This scholarship was instituted at the University of Connecticut in 1993 to attract and retain Connecticut’s brightest and most talented students. This four-year scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, room, board, and a book allowance. Eligibility requirements are as follows: student must be a US citizen or permanent Resident Alien; student must have been nominated a National Merit semifinalist, a National Achievement finalist, or a National Hispanic Recognition finalist, or be nominated by the high school guidance counselor; student must be in the top 10 percent of their graduating class; student has to be enrolled in a secondary school system in the state of Connecticut and expected to graduate and enroll at the University of Connecticut by the year 2001.

See your guidance counselor right away if you are interested in applying for this scholarship. Application and all supporting documents must be postmarked before NOVEMBER 10, 2000.

University of Connecticut Day of Pride Scholarship — This scholarship was instituted in 1976 to attract and enroll students who have been traditionally under-represented and to promote cultural diversity in the university community. The scholarships are offered on a competitive basis to 15 outstanding Connecticut high school seniors. This four-year scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, room, board, and a book allowance. Eligibility requirements are as follows: student must be a US citizen or a Permanent Resident Alien; they must be involved in leadership activities through high school and or community; student must be in the top 15 percent of their graduating class; must be a Connecticut resident; student must be enrolled in a secondary school system in the state of Connecticut and expected to graduate and enroll at the University of Connecticut 2001.

See your guidance counselor right away if interested in applying for this scholarship, as the application and supporting documents must be postmarked before NOVEMBER 10, 2000.

2001 AFS Awards for Excellence Scholarship Program — Students who best exemplify academic excellence, leadership, and community service may apply for this scholarship. The top five prizes are full scholarships for AFS year programs in Asia, Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Africa. The other Scholarships range from $500 to $3,500 towards any AFS Program available at the time application is reviewed. Interested students should see Mrs McEvoy in the Career Center. Deadline is DECEMBER 15, 2000.

Principal’s Leadership Award — This is for high school seniors who are in the top 20 percent of their class and who demonstrate leadership. This year the program will award 150 Scholarships nationally of $1,000 each. Only one student may be nominated from NHS. Applications due in Career Center by NOVEMBER 17, 2000.

The Chapel of Four Chaplains — 2001 Annual Essay Contest for High School Seniors. Essay topic – “How can we build bridges of understanding through commitment and service to humanity?” Entries must be postmarked by Monday, NOVEMBER 6, 2000. Awards are as follows: One $1,000, two $750, one $500, and seven $100.

The Chapel of Four Chaplains — 2001 National Art Contest – all high school seniors are eligible. Any form of flat art reflecting the theme “Making the World a Better Place Through Service and Sacrifice.” Must be original work and conceived by the student. First place – $1,000, 2nd place – $750, 3rd place – $500. There will also be 10 Honorable Mentions. Postmark deadline is DECEMBER 1, 2000.

2000-2001 Target All–Around Scholarships Application — This is for all high school seniors, graduates, or current full time college students who plan to and do enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study. Applicants will be judged on the following criteria: the number of hours of community volunteer service; list of volunteer leadership awards and honors; appraisal form completed by supervisor or volunteer leader; essay; GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Preference in the selection of recipients will be given to students who reside in the communities where Target stores are located. There will be five Grand Prize Scholarships of $10,000 and 1,956 Scholarships of $1,000. Postmark deadline is NOVEMBER 1, 2000.

DeVry Institute Scholarships — This is for high school seniors graduating in 2001. DeVry will award two full tuition scholarships at each of its US Institutes. Student must complete an application for admission to DeVry in order to be considered. Application for scholarship must be postmarked by March 9, 2001. However, most scholarships are awarded on first come first served basis so apply early. More information can be found online at www.devry.edu.
