Heading To Japan For “Murder Abroad” Book Series Discussion

BETHEL — On Tuesday, November 14, from 7:30 to 9 pm, Bethel Public Library will continue its fall book discussion series, “Murder Abroad.” Each month through December, the focus will be on a mystery set in a different part of the globe.

The November selection is Inspector Imanishi Investigates, by Seicho Matsumoto, which is set in Japan.

Originally published in Tokyo in 1961 under the title Vessel of Sand, Mr Matsumoto’s masterpiece appeared first as a newspaper serial before going on to sell millions of copies in book form. With the unique combination of grisly murder and an investigator who is also a gardener with a fondness for haiku, it casts a whole new spin on the mystery subgenre of police procedurals.

The discussion will be moderated by the library’s own Lauren Baratz-Logsted

Book discussions take place in the Seelye Room, with refreshments provided by The Friends of the Bethel Public Library. Registration for the program is suggested.

All programs sponsored by the Bethel Public Library are free, open to the public, and meet accessibility requirements for the disabled. Those needing special accommodations should contact the library as soon as possible to make arrangements.

The library, at 189 Greenwood Avenue, can be reached by calling 794-8756.
