Additional Scholarships Available At Newtown High

The following Scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Applications and/or more information for these scholarships, as well as ones previously listed in The Bee, are available there. Please call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 if you have any questions.

The Connecticut Funeral Directors Association – will award eight $500 scholarships to high school seniors interested in pursuing careers in a profession that provides emotional or medical support to families, i.e. counseling, social services, psychology, psychiatry, nursing, medicine, social, gerontology, and funeral service. Applicants must have maintained at least a B grade point average in grades 10, 11, and 12. Applications can be downloaded from www.ctfda.com. Deadline for applications is April 19, 2001.

Disabled Workers’ Scholarship – for a high school senior who is the child of a worker totally disabled in the work place who lives in Connecticut. The scholarship provides $1,250 per semester for four years. The award is for a student who demonstrates both academic excellence and financial need to attend college. Applications must be received by March 15, 2001.

Connecticut AFL-CIO/Hank Kershner Scholarship – a $500 tuition award for a high school senior who is the son or daughter of a dues-paying member or him/herself the member of any union affiliated with the state labor federation. Completed applications must be in by May 7, 2001.

Michaels Jewelers Foundation/University of Connecticut Scholarships – for high school seniors who plan to enter the School of Business at the University of Connecticut and participate in intercollegiate athletics.  Two scholarships for $1,250 per year will be granted yearly and renewed each year for 3 more years providing UConn athletic and scholastic standards are maintained. The awards will be granted primarily to student athletes on the basis of financial need, scholarship, citizenship, and business promise.  Applications must be submitted by April 15, 2001.

Town and Country Garden Club – a $350 scholarship will be presented to a senior interested in pursuing a career in the field of environmental science, turf management, forestry, or horticulture. Deadline for applications is April 27, 2001.

Schering/Key Corporation “Will to Win” Asthma Athlete Scholarship Program – for high school scholar-athletes with asthma. Grants of $10,000, $5,000, and $1,000 in college scholarships will be awarded to ten deserving high school seniors. Completed applications must be in by April 30, 2001.

The Susan Fund Inc. – for high school seniors who are residents of Fairfield County and who are currently, or in the past have been, in treatment for cancer. Criteria for considering scholarships are financial status, academic performance, community involvement, and personal commitment. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2001.

The Glenn Moon Scholarship Fund (Association of Retired Teachers of Conn., Inc.) – for all 2001 graduates of Connecticut high schools, public or private, whose serious intention is to pursue a career in teaching in public or private schools, hopefully in Connecticut. Personal and educational qualifications will be evaluated as follows: 1) Scholarship record – transcript, class standing, SAT scores; 2) Financial need; 3) Character and personality; 4) Interests and educational activities. The main scholarship award is $1,500 for the first year. Additional awards of $1,500 will be granted for each of the subsequent 3 years, provided all qualifications continue to be met. Will also present three one-time grants of $1,000 each. Completed forms must be returned no later than March 31, 2001.

Head O’ Meadow Scholarship – two $1,000 scholarships for a graduating senior of Newtown High School who attended Head O’ Meadow School and ranks in the top half of his/her class. The application deadline is May 1, 2001.

National Federation of the Blind – all applicants for these scholarships must be legally blind and planning to pursue a full-time post-secondary course of study in the fall semester of 2001. The Federation will be awarding over $115,000 in scholarships to 30 of the most highly qualified blind students in the nation. Application must be received by March 31, 2001.

Connecticut Junior Soccer Association, Inc. (CJSA) – four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to seniors who have played soccer with a Connecticut Junior Soccer Association affiliated club, have a C+ average or better, and graduate high school in 2001. Must plan on attending a school of higher education. Applications are due by April 6, 2001.

Connecticut PTA and Nutmeg Statewide PTA Scholarships – three awards will be presented to graduating seniors from PTA/PTSA high schools at the CT PTA State Convention in April 2001. The CT PTA will present two awards of $1,000 each and the NSPTA will present one award in the amount of $5,000. The students must be planning to attend a four-year college to pursue, for the CT PTA awards, a career in teaching and, for the NSPTA Award, a career in service to children. There is a separate essay for each category and it is to be no more than one page. The CT PTA Award asks, “What is your reason for entering the teaching profession?” and the NSPTA topic asks, “How do you expect to be serving children ten years after college graduation?” They also want a brief account of your school/community involvement (no more than one page). The Newtown High School Scholarship Committee can only nominate one candidate for each category. Therefore, applications must be in to the Career Center by March 2, 2001.

President’s Student Service Challenge and the Newtown High School PTSA Scholarship – a $1,000 award offered through the Federal Government and the Newtown High School PTSA. This award is based solely on community service. Newtown High School seniors who contributed at least 100 hours of service in any one year, not over the four years of high school, and attending a post high school program. Scholarship winner will be chosen by PTSA President and NHS Scholarship Committee. Application must be returned to Mrs McEvoy in the Career Center by April 2, 2001.
