Junior Varsity

Although the Lady Nighthawks’ junior varsity team won’t finish the season undefeated, like the team from the 1998-99 season did, it still is doing pretty well through the first half of the 1999-2000 campaign.

In a 49-33 win over Stratford a couple weeks ago, the ‘Hawks overcame a slow offensive start. Erin Saunders scored 12 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead the effort while Shannon Kohn added 11 points, four rebounds, five steals and three assists in a very solid all-around game.

Jessica Phillips chipped in with nine points and five rebounds while Christine Manfredonia and Kristen McGrath each added four points. Caitlin Martin had another good game at the point with four points, four rebounds, a pair of steals, and a season-high 10 assists.

Monica Zigman and Monica Cluff both played well off the bench.

In a 45-42 loss to Pomperaug, the ‘Hawks – without their center, Phillips – fell a little bit short in their comeback attempt. The effort by Kohn – 16 points and five steals – simply wasn’t enough even with an extra 11 points from Saunders (f5-for-5 from the field).

Cluff and Manfredonia added four points apiece while Martin had three points and Zigman and McGrath two each.

The ‘Hawks also participated late last month in the Masuk Holiday Tournament – a first for the junior varsity squad – and finished third after a 37-24 loss to Joel Barlow and 34-26 win over Warren Harding.

In the loss to Barlow, the ‘Hawks had to make do without Martin and Phillips and it hurt them as they had to go to work with just six players. Kohn led the team with 11 points and eight rebounds, also dishing off four assists. Zigman added five points of her own and grabbed four rebounds with two steals and three blocked shots. Cluff and Manfredonia chipped in with three points apiece while Saunders (seven rebounds and a blocked shot) and McGrath (three rebounds and two steals) had solid games.

In the win over Harding, the ‘Hawks were back to full strength. Saunders and Kohn combined for 18 points with Kohn also grabbing eight rebounds. Phillips chipped in with five points, five rebounds, four blocks and four assists. Manfredonia added five points and Martin, still hobbled with an ankle injury, made a three-point bucket while grabbing a pair of rebounds.

Zigman finished with four rebounds and a blocked shot.
