Sobriety Checkpoint

Set For Sept. 15

Police plan to conduct their third and last sobriety checkpoint of the summer on the night of Saturday, September 15, and early morning hours of Sunday, September 16, according to police Sergeant Chris Vanghele.

Ten patrol officers and one sergeant will man the checkpoint at an undisclosed location.

Every vehicle passing through the checkpoint will be stopped and all drivers will be interviewed by police to learn whether they have been drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs, according to Sgt Vanghele.

The sobriety checkpoint planned for September 15 and 16 will be the sixth such effort conducted by town police since May 2000.

The purpose of such checkpoints is finding motorists who are driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, as well as deterring intoxicated motorists from driving. At checkpoints, police also enforce the state’s laws on the use of seatbelts and child safety restraints, as well as various motor vehicle laws and criminal laws.

The sobriety checkpoint program is partially funded by a state grant as part of the state’s 2001 Expanded DUI Enforcement Program.
