HARTFORD â Many local child care centers and adult day care centers in Connecticut participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and provide nutritious meals to more than 14,000 participants daily at more than 250 locations statewide through 125 locally sponsored programs.Â
Also through the program, local day care home providers provide nutritious meals to more than 4,800 children daily at approximately 980 locations statewide under the sponsorship of seven local and statewide sponsoring organizations.Â
The Child and Adult Care Food Program is funded by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and provides nutritious meals and snacks at no separate charge to infants, young children, and adults receiving services in day care centers as well as infants and children living in emergency shelters.
The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) accepts applications from public and private institutions for the CACFP on an ongoing basis. Sponsoring institutions serve meals to all participants regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. Â
Child and Adult Care Food Program sponsors are reimbursed for each meal served, according to predetermined US Department of Agriculture reimbursement rates based on the income levels of the families served by the programs.
Child and Adult Care Food Program applications and a list of local CACFP participating agencies are available through the CSDEâs Bureau of Health/Nutrition, Family Services and Adult Education, 25 Industrial Park Road, Middletown CTÂ 06457-1543.
