Some Of The Curator’s Favorite Things

WATERBURY — Mattatuck Museum Curator Ann Smith will offer a lecture on Thursday, September 16, at 7 pm, focusing on her favorite artworks in the museum.

Mr Smith’s lecture will offer an inside look and discussion of some of her favorite works in the museum’s permanent collection. She was both director and curator of the museum from 1976 to 1996, and since then has served as curator.

The museum focuses on the history of the Naugatuck Valley and the work of Connecticut artists, from the earliest settlers through the present. Ms Smith will talk about some historic paintings, such as the Frederick Church icebergs, something modern and perhaps some works from storage such as the Calder standing mobile from the Davis family.

The lecture will be followed by another “Museum Favorites” presented by Harry Philbrick, director of the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield. He is the juror for this year’s “Connecticut Vision” exhibit. His lecture, focusing on his favorite pieces at the Aldrich, will be Thursday, October 14, also at 7 pm.

A $5 donation is suggested for each program, and preregistration is encouraged. The Mattatuck Museum is at 144 West Main Street. For information, call 203-753-0381 extension 10 or visit www.                                              MattatuckMuseum.org.
