*The Wagon Master Does It Again: Willard Hemstra, a charming man who lives in Nunnawauk Meadows, has created a new model of a Budweiser wagon and Clydesdale horses pulling it.

Done completely by hand, Mr Hemstra carved the five-foot long wagon, the eight horses pulling the wagon, and the 32 keg barrels in the back of the wagon. The new wagon will be on view in the first floor display cases until August 31.

Children’s Programs

*Preschool Story Times: Registration for fall story times begins August 26 and will continue to September 6. Classes are offered for 2- and 3-year-old and their caregivers on Mondays from 10 to 10:30 or 11 to 11:30, and Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10.

Classes for 3-5-year olds are offered on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11 to 11:45, and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 1:45.

Children must be 2 years of age on or before September 11 and a resident of Newtown to be eligible for this free program. Registration forms are available at the children’s circulation desk; no phone registrations will be accepted.

*Nutmeg Book Discussion: The Boy Who Saved Baseball, by John H. Ritter, will be the next Nutmeg nominee to be discussed on Wedn, August 30, from 4-5 pm.

The fate of a small California town rests on the outcome of one baseball game, and Tom Gallagher hopes to lead his team to victory with the secrets of the now disgraced player, Dante Del Gato.

Programs For Young Adults

*Let’s Talk About: The next YA BookTalk will be on Wednesday, September 13, from 4 to 5 pm, in the Story Room.

Let’s talk about Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, in which 12-year-old Meggie learns that her father, who repairs and binds books for a living, can “read” fictional characters to life. What happens when one of those characters abducts them and tries to force him into service?

Read the book to find out, and then join us for a discussion. Readers in grades 5 are invited. and up please join us. Sign up at the main floor circulation desk, call the library, or just drop in.

Adult Programs

*Sounds Of Summer: Join us at The Pleasance, at the corner of Main Street and Sugar Street, for free concerts this summer. Picnic under the stars with friends and neighbors. Bring your own blankets or low lawn chairs for seating. Concerts begin at 7 pm. The 2006 series will continue on Friday, August 18, with Goldrush, and then concludes on Friday, September 8, with The Golden Angel Jazz Band.

In the event of rain on any of the concert dates, the shows will move into the lower meeting room at the library.

*Pakistani Cooking for Carnivores: Kanwal will be returning to the library on Thur, August 24, at 6 pm, for a cooking demonstration focusing specifically on Pakistani dishes for meat lovers.

Come learn how to make beef tikka masala, chicken pallow, fried fish (salmon) and raita.

There is a $15 supply fee. Please call the library to register.

*Wellness Series: The library will host a six-part series, “Enhancing Wellness,” on consecutive Tuesdays, September 12 to October 17. Come learn a few easy ways to take care of yourself and your family, reduce stress, and promote inner peace.

Each program will run from 7 to 9 pm. The schedule is as follows: September 12, “Massage and Jin Shin Jitsu”; September 19, “Yoga”; September 26, “Centering and Creativity”; October 3, “Relieving Stress with a Spa Experience at Home”; October 10, “Botanical Medicine”; and October 17, “Nutrition.”
