Raising Children

Of Good Character

Dr Kevin Ryan, founder and director emeritus of the Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character at Boston University, will be at Newtown Middle School Tuesday, October 14, from 7 to 9 pm, to address the critical issue of raising moral children in this 21st Century culture.

According to Dr Ryan, his primary mission is to support elementary and secondary schools in efforts to aid children in acquiring good moral judgment and the enduring habits that are at the heart of good character. His work fulfills this mission through research, writing, and directly working with schools, teachers, and teacher education institutes.

In addition to directing the center, Professor Ryan taught both graduate and undergraduate courses in Boston’s School of Education. Dr Ryan received the Boston University Scholar-Teacher Award. In 1990, he was cited by the Association of Teacher Educators as one of America’s Outstanding Educators. He has appeared recently on CBS’s This Morning, ABC’s Good Morning America, The O’Reilly Factor, CNN, and the Public Broadcasting System speaking on character education.

Newtown Parent Connection invites the public to hear Dr Ryan’s practical wisdom, which is the culmination of a lifetime of research and writings on the topic of moral development and education. This forum is offered in direct response to the results of the 2007 Governor’s Prevention Partnership Connecticut School Health Survey that Newtown and other students in the state took in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12.
