Police Commission Reelects Mattegat As Chairman

By Andrew Gorosko

The Police Commission has reelected Republican member Carol Mattegat to another one-year term as the agency’s chairman.

The elected five-member Police Commission oversees the operation of the police department. The panel creates and implements regulations for the police department. The commission appoints, promotes, suspends, and removes members of the police department, as needed. The commission also functions as the town’s and the borough’s traffic authority.

Ms Mattegat was elected to another one-year term as chairman at a December 2 commission session, attended by herself and Republican members Duane Giannini and Brian Budd. Democratic member Robert W. Connor and Independent member Bruce Walczak did not attend the meeting.

In the voting at the session, Mr Budd nominated Ms Mattegat for the chairmanship. It was seconded by Mr Giannini and carried unanimously.

Mr Budd then nominated Mr Giannini for the post of vice chairman, a move that was seconded by Ms Mattegat and carried unanimously.

Mr Giannini replaces Mr Connor as the panel’s vice chairman.

Ms Mattegat has served as the Police Commission’s chairman since December 2003, following the five-year chairmanship of former Republican member James Reilly.

Ms Mattegat also had served as chairman for a one-year term in 1996, following the longstanding chairmanship of former Republican member Richard Sturdevant.
