Donut Justice Prevails In Scarecrow Contest

By Laurie Borst

The votes are in! Before Newtowners go to the polls to vote for representatives in November, another vote takes place at Newtown Middle School — the perennially popular Scarecrow Sculpture Contest.

Eighth graders at NMS work in small groups, letting their imaginations run wild outside the box, to create scarecrows. While the students have fun creating their masterpieces, they also have the satisfaction of knowing the voters will donate cash for their votes, which will be given to charity.

“Many people complimented the outstanding sculptures on the grounds of the Newtown Middle School,” said GATES teacher and contest coordinator Lorraine Conway. “All the teams are to be congratulated for their many, varied, and unusual creative ideas. Not only did they give the opportunity for local families to enjoy the wonderful display, but the voting brought in over $1,050 for charity. The winning teams will get to decide which charities will benefit.”

This year, 25 teams created sculptures of spiders, mad muffins, wild things, angry donuts, movie characters, and many others.

First Place this year went to Donut Justice, sculpted by Alexis Archer, Hannah Barrett, Rob Daigle, and Doug Pierce.

Second Place was awarded to Captain Jack Sparrow, constructed by Lexi Black, Emily Kopcik, Lauren O’Connell, and Lucy Riley.

There was a tie for Third Place. Steamboat Willie (aka Mickey Mouse) was built by Abbey Doski, Hannah Maret, and Laurel Speed. Monopoly was constructed by Emily Ashbolt, Nicole Lang, Jen McDonald, and Shannon McDonald.

Honorable Mention was awarded to Pumpkin Bear, by Maddie Dorso, Lauren Harrison, and Katie Martinelli.
