Giraffe Head
On May 4, a resident of Obtuse Road in Hawleyville reported to police that someone had stolen a brown papier-mâché giraffe head ornament from the property. The giraffe head had been displayed as a decorative item there.
Police are investigating the theft and ask anyone with information about the larceny to contact police patrol Officer John McCluskey at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.
Warrant
When she was being released on May 5 after serving a sentence at York Correctional Institution in Niantic, police went to the womenâs prison and served an arrest warrant against Marietta Hickey, 40, of Waterbury, charging her with fourth-degree larceny.
Police said the arrest stems from a series of incidents last July and August at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street in which Hickey allegedly shoplifted a variety of items from the store.
Following arrest processing, police released Hickey on $25,000 bail for a May 21 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.
Two MV Violations
Police report they stopped motorist John McGrath, 47, of Shelton on South Main Street near Rickyâs Shopping Center about 6:30 pm May 3 to investigate after he was seen talking on a handheld cellphone while driving.
After investigating, police charged McGrath with illegal use of a handheld cellphone while driving and also with driving with a suspended license.
Police released McGrath on a written promise to appear in court on May 18.
Nissan Vs Honda
Motorist Janice Marks, 57, of Oxford was driving a 2002 Honda CRV northward on Toddy Hill Road about 10:25 am May 3, and then slowed to make a right turn onto Turnberry Lane, police said.
Northbound motorist Victoria Downs, 24, of Monroe, who was driving a 2010 Nissan Altima behind the Honda, then attempted to stop, but struck the rear end of the Honda, police said.
There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Downs for following too closely.
Highway DUI
State police report they saw motorist Antonio Rao, 30, of Waterbury driving a vehicle eastward on Interstate 84, near Exit 10, which was weaving in and out of the right travel lane at about 1:30 am on May 10, so they stopped him to investigate.
State police then arrested Rao on charges of driving under the influence, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and failure to maintain positioning in a travel lane.
After arrest processing, state police released Rao on $1,000 bail for a May 24 court appearance.
I-84 DUI
State police said they received reports of a motorist driving erratically on eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, about 1:30 am on May 6, so they went to the area to investigate.
State police said they found that motorist Day Anne Dasilva, 32, of Danbury was driving erratically, so they stopped her to investigate.
After giving her field sobriety tests, state police charged her with driving under the influence. State police released Dasilva on $500 bail for a May 17 court appearance.
Slippery Ramp
At about 11:53 am on May 8, motorist Ralph Giannattassio, 21, of Bridgeport was driving a 2009 Ford E-150 van too fast on the wet pavement of the Exit 9 on-ramp for westbound Interstate 84, after which the van spun out of control and then struck an embankment along the right road shoulder, state police said.
Giannattassio was not injured. State police issued him an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.
Two Accidents
State police report that two accidents occurred on Interstate 84, near the Exit 9 interchange, mid-afternoon on May 8.
In the first accident at about 2:47 pm, motorist Sybil Resnick, 57, of Bayside, N.Y., was driving a Chevrolet Cobalt westward on I-84, west of Exit 9, when she lost control of the auto and then struck the metal-beam guardrails on the highway median, state police said.
Resnick refused medical attention, state police said. Resnick was warned for failure to drive in the established lanes, according to state police.
About 3 pm, another accident occurred on the adjacent eastbound lanes of I-84 as traffic was slowing due to the crash that just occurred in the westbound lanes, state police said.
Eastbound motorist Sarah Murtha, 17, of 102 Boggs Hill Road, who was driving a 2006 Audi A-420-QT, slowed and was then struck from behind by eastbound motorist Joshua Whitman, 23, of Wallingford, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Impala, state police said.
There were no injuries. State police said that Whitman was following too closely.
Saturn Vs Barrier
Motorist Michael Saunders, 21, of Waterbury, who was driving a 1994 Saturn SC-2 eastward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 10, about 5:40 am on May 7, drifted to the right and collided with a concrete barrier rail positioned along the road shoulder, state police said.
Saunders was not injured. Enforcement information was not available.
Fairfield Hills
Police arrested two men following an incident on May 9 at the town-owned Fairfield Hills core campus.
Police received a call about suspicious activity occurring at Litchfield House at the campus about 3:07 pm. Police went to the campus and met with security staff there, after which police found two men illegally inside Litchfield House.
Police said they arrested Matthew Hughes, 23, of Woodbury, and Adam Birchfield, 25, of Aurora, Coloo. Police charged each man with second-degree criminal trespassing and with third-degree criminal mischief.
Each man was released on $100 bail for a May 25 court appearance.
Boulevard Crash
Police report that motorist Lee Terrence, 17, of 72 Alpine Drive was driving a 1995 Ford Escort on The Boulevard about 3:08 pm April 25, in an area with two sharp curves where the street crosses above the Housatonic Railroadâs tracks.
While negotiating a left curve in the road, the Ford went off the pavement and landed atop a rock, police said. Terrence was not injured. Police said they issued him an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.
Mailbox Vandalism
Police report that between 8 and 10 pm on Saturday, May 8, someone vandalized more than a dozen mailboxes in the Charter Ridge Drive area of Sandy Hook.
Police are investigating the property damage and ask anyone with information on the criminal mischief to contact Officer Bart Lorancaitis at the police station at 203-426-5841.
Cellphone Violation
Police said that while on patrol about 6 pm May 11, they spotted motorist Jacob Lopez, 29, of Danbury talking on a cellphone while driving near 78 South Main Street, so they stopped him to investigate.
Police said they charged Lopez with illegal use of a handheld cellphone while driving and with driving while under suspension.
Lopez was released on $250 bail for a May 19 appearance in Danbury Superior Court, police said.
