Bombers Living Up To Their Name With Plenty Of Offense
The Newtown Gold Bombers 8 year old travel baseball team experienced another first as it traveled to Bethel for its first road game, this past week. The Bombers continued to display a perfect blend of hitting and defense with a second straight win in their inaugural travel season. They defeated Bethel 12-2.
Sean OâSullivan jumpstarted the team with a leadoff single then moved to second on a groundout. Hayden Miller followed with a single to set the stage for George Sandercox to deliver an RBI single. James Celentano followed with an RBI single to close the first inning scoring. Jake Mailloux led off the third with a single, then moved up to third on two consecutive groundouts. With two outs, Sean OâSullivan added his second straight hit of the game to drive in the run and make the score 3-0. David Braun followed with a single allowing Hayden Miller to keep the inning going with a hard hit RBI single of his own. Jack Petersen then followed with a run-scoring hit to make it 5-0. The Bombers pushed one more run across in the fourth to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Bethel pushed across a run in the bottom of the inning but the rally was short-lived as the Newtown Bombers erupted for six runs in the fifth inning. OâSullivan banged out his third hit of the game and was followed by David Braunâs single to set the stage for Hayden Miller.Â
Miller delivered a crushing two-run double to make it 8-1. Jack Petersen added his second straight run-scoring single and George Sandercox delivered a two-RBI single. After Tyler Harrison got on with his second hit of the game, Jackson Newsom singled to bring up Josh Parsons, who completed the scoring with a RBI groundout.
The Bombers were equally impressive in the field as they only surrendered two runs. Great plays were turned in by Benjamin Ochs who fielded a grounder at the pitcherâs mound and completed the throw to first to end the first inning as Bethel was threatening to score. James Celentano made a great catch at first on a short popup in the second and David Braun handled a hard hit groundball at first in the third inning to retire the side. Jackson Newsom made a great catch on a deep fly ball to right center to halt the Bethel rally in the sixth inning.
The Gold Bombers won their third consecutive game in their young travel baseball careers with an impressive 12-8 victory over a very strong Beth-Wood squad. Beth-Wood jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning to put the Bombers in their biggest deficit to date. The Bombers showed the poise of a veteran team, as they stormed back to take a 3-2 lead after one inning. The Bombers increased their lead to 5-2 but Beth-Wood was up to the challenge as the opponent scored a run in the third to close the gap to 5-3. The Bombers put two more runs on the board to take what seemed like a comfortable 7-3 lead but Beth-Wood wouldnât go quietly. The visitors tacked on four runs in the fifth to tie the game at 7. The Bombers keep the pressure on as they pounded out five runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 12-7. Beth-Wood gave a valiant effort in the sixth but only managed one run to make the final score 12-8. Jack Petersen had a 3-for-3 game, including a double, two triples, four RBI, and three runs scored. David Braun, Hayden Miller, and George Sandercox all went 3-for-3, while Jackson Newsom and Sean OâSullivan each collected two hits. Hayden Miller had the defensive play of the game from the shortstop position. Miller ranged far to his left on a well hit ball and made a diving stop, and then spun almost 360 degrees, and while still on his knees, fired a strike over to first base to record the out.Â
The Gold Bombers played their best game of the season with a 13-7 win over Southbury at Liberty Field on Sunday. The visitors from Southbury scored one run in the first and were threatening to add more but the Gold defense came up big to end the rally. Jack Petersen collected an assist to Tyler Harrison at third, and then Petersen snared a hard liner to short to end the threat. The Bombers lived up to their name in the bottom of the first as David Braun singled and Hayden Miller delivered a run-scoring double. Jack Petersen then came to bat and delivered a mammoth blast to deep left field and circled the bases for a two-run homer. With Newtown clinging to a slim 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the third, the bats came alive again. Sean OâSullivan started the rally with a line single up the middle. David Braun then singled, setting up Hayden Millerâs two RBI double. Jack Petersen then followed and nearly hit his second consecutive homer, this time settling for an RBI triple. Three more singles followed from George Sandercox, Tyler Harrison, and Josh Parsons. Matt Williams then batted and delivered an RBI single to finish the scoring. Southbury continued to battle and tacked on four quick runs in the fifth inning and with runners on second and third and one out, Williams made the clutch defensive play of the game. Williams caught a deep fly ball in left field that saved two runs and would have cut the lead to 9-8. The Bombers took advantage of the great defensive stop and tacked on four more runs in the fifth as OâSullivan, Braun, and Miller delivered consecutive singles. Petersen continued his torrid hitting as he delivered his second straight triple and Tyler Harrison swatted a run-scoring single to complete the Bombersâ scoring. Southbury managed one run in the sixth but the Bombersâ defense proved to be too stingy. David Braun, Hayden Miller, Jack Petersen, and Tyler Harrison all finished 3-for-3, while Sean OâSullivan, George Sandercox, and Benjamin Ochs had two hits apiece. The Gold Bombers are now 4-0 this season.Â
