DANBURY â Gluten-free foods will be cooked and served at an âEating Meetingâ of Nutmeg Celiac Sprue Support Group on Friday, May 18, at the Center for Behavioral Health on Lake Avenue at Old Mill Road.
Sterkâs Bakery from Ontario, Canada, will demonstrate and provide their products for sale to all those who have Celiac Disease and must avoid the basic grains â wheat, oats, barley and rye.
Breads, rolls, bagels, cookies, pizza crusts and pastas have satisfied members in the United States and Canada for several years.
âThe company only makes gluten-free products so there is no problem with cross-contamination,â says Syd Aronowitz, president of Sterkâs Bakery.
People living with gluten sensitivity, a malabsorbtion syndrome, will enjoy the sampling and the opportunity to exchange information with others who have the immunologic disease.
Celiac Disease is not a food allergy, which can be outgrown. Those who are diagnosed must stay on a gluten-free diet for life.
The May 18 meeting will start at 7:30 pm and will be preceded and followed by a social hour with gluten-free refreshments. For further information call Edith K. Meffley at 203-438-6108.
