CT 'Blue Book' Dedicated To 'Amistad'
CT âBlue Bookâ
Dedicated To âAmistadâ
HARTFORD â Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz has dedicated the 2000 edition of the State Register & Manual to the Freedom Schooner Amistad, which is currently docked in Hartford along Riverfront Plaza.
âThe Amistad serves as a reminder that our journey in search of tolerance and equality, while incomplete, is ongoing,â said Secretary Bysiewicz. âIt is to this proud symbol of courage, justice, and moral strength that the 2000 Connecticut Register & Manual is dedicated.â
Better known as the âBlue Book,â a Register for the State of Connecticut was first published in book form in New London in 1785. Although it has changed some in both name and content over the years, it has always been a valuable resource and reference tool for anyone interested in Connecticut and its government. This yearâs edition totals over 900 pages.
The story of Amistad illustrates the tragedies and triumphs of the United States and, in particular, Connecticut. Seized in Long Island Sound in 1839, the Spanish schooner Amistad, with its 53 captives, was towed to New London harbor. The captives were jailed in New Haven, first stood trial and then were ordered free in Hartford, eventually winning their freedom under a ruling by the United States Supreme Court.
The Secretary of the Stateâs office recently expanded the Blue Bookâs public availability by publishing an Internet edition, which can be viewed by visiting the agencyâs Web site at www.sots.ct.state.us. For information on purchasing the 2000 State Register & Manual call 860/509-6197.
